Peter succeeds in making volumes appear weightless with the juxtaposition of reflective surfaces. This is particularly dramatic when observed in the dark
Goodman Road is an interesting enclave of landed properties ranging from good class bungalows to detached and semi-detached houses—the virtual eastern counterpart of Bukit Timah Road in the western part of central Singapore.

Construction of this project lasted from 2016 all the way to late 2018 when all works, including interior design, were completed. The house has a total floor area of about 10,000 sqft including the basement.

The client wanted a timeless space where he and his family can enjoy a seamless life of comfort and ease without having to leave the house. “They also wanted an abode where interior and exterior spaces merge together,” says Mr. Peter Tay, founder of Peter Tay Studio, who designed the interiors.

“I decided to create a space where spatial quality is paramount, and mere decoration secondary. I approached the project with minimalist design ideas. Minimalism to me is not about creating a space devoid of design but removing unneccesary ornamentation. I wanted my client to discover the beautiful spatial quality that is created by the use of carefully selected materials like the marble and steel.

Reflective

Minimalism

Multiple reflections are at play in the balcony where the water, glass panels and mirror tiles throw images back to each other
“Steel surfaces are often reflective, and reflection, which somehow shows up in all my works, has become some form of an identity. I worked this very clearly into my design for the living and dining spaces.” Tay crafted a unique space that merges the indoor with the outdoor through calculated use of simultaneous reflection. Pieces of furniture, meanwhile, carefully selected and positioned, anchor the space and provide multiple references for the merged views.
