The 2025 Xpeng X9 is redefining the luxury Electric MPV.

The 2025 Xpeng X9 boldly redefines what a luxury electric family or business car can be. As China’s best-selling electric MPV enters its second generation, this seven-seater challenges traditional minivan design with innovative technology and refined aesthetics. Xpeng Motors, established in 2014, concentrates on creating smart EVs with integrated AI and advanced driver-assistance systems. The company aims to become a global leader in AI-driven mobility just like its competitor, Tesla.

Breaking MPV Stereotypes

The X9 immediately sets itself apart from standard boxy MPVs with its sleek, almost sedan-like profile. Measuring 520cm in length, 198cm in width, and 179cm in height, it provides a spacious interior while achieving an impressive 0.227 drag coefficient — comparable to many sports cars. This low drag significantly improves the X9’s efficiency.

Xpeng describes their design philosophy as embracing “futuristic aesthetics to break stereotypes for traditional MPVs.” The low-slung profile and smooth surfaces create a spacecraft-like appearance that Xpeng calls the “Starship of Tomorrow”. Perhaps starship might not be the best description, but Xpeng wants you to know their design is out of this world, no doubt. The front features signature lighting elements, while the rear incorporates clean, minimalist cues emphasising the vehicle’s modern electrified identity.

The X9 offers four exterior colour options: Nebula White, Crescent Silver, Dark Knight Black, and Matte Grey, along with three interior options: Light Grey, Meteorite Black, and Moon Shadow Brown. These colour combinations contribute to giving the MPV a contemporary and elegant appearance.

Performance That Delivers

The X9 offers two variants — “Premium Seat” and “Grand Seat” — both of which are built on Xpeng’s SEPA 2.0 architecture. The base models feature a single front-mounted motor producing 235 kW (315 hp) and 450 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 7.7 seconds. That gives this seven-seater a very respectable acceleration. Beyond straight-line speed, active rear-wheel steering delivers a remarkably tight 5.4 meter turning radius, making this large MPV surprisingly agile in urban settings and parking lots — an uncommon feature in the MPV segment.

Revolutionary Battery Technology

The X9’s most remarkable feature is its battery technology and charging efficiency. The standard-range model features a 94.8 kWh LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery, providing a range of up to 590 km — more than sufficient for daily commutes and long-distance trips.

The game-changing charging technology supports 5C charging rates, adding 405 km of range in just 10 minutes, while 10-80% charging completes in approximately 12 minutes. A 5C charging rate means a battery can be charged at a rate five times its nominal capacity in one hour. This ultra-fast charging addresses major concerns of EV buyers about long-distance journeys and family trips.

Smart Cabin Experience

The X9 features Xpeng’s XOS Tianji smart cabin system, advancing the “human-machine co-driving experience.” The interior features 496 updated components for enhanced comfort and functionality, with a seven-seat layout that prioritises passenger comfort in all positions.

Advanced noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) reduction technologies create a serene environment. Xpeng invested heavily in sound damping and structural rigidity to ensure quiet and comfortable rides, regardless of the seating position.

Premium features include intelligent “Anti-Pinch” sliding doors on both sides, cosmic ambient lighting, and a 23-speaker Xopera audio system with driver headrest speakers. Both front seats offer memory, welcome, ventilation, and massage functions as standard.

Second-row passengers enjoy a 21.4-inch entertainment system, integrated refrigerator with heating and cooling capabilities, and premium leather seats with 10-way electrical adjustment, four-way lumbar support, two-way leg support, three-speed ventilation, and six massage modes. Designed to meet the needs of both individual and family travel, the XPENG X9 can also be configured into a spacious four-seater with a single click, electrically folding the thirdrow seats.

Advanced Safety and Autonomous Driving

Regarding safety, the X9 has earned a five-star C-NCAP rating with an overall score of 86.6% and an impressive performance of 97.68% in active safety systems. The C-NCAP rating, China’s New Car Assessment Program, has seen significant improvements since its inception and is now regarded as a reliable safety rating system. However, it has faced criticism in the past. While initially considered less strict than other programmes, it has evolved to compare with national programmes.

The optional XNGP (Xpeng Navigation Guided Pilot) system represents the company’s pinnacle of autonomous driving. Equipped with dual LiDAR sensors and two Nvidia Orin X systemon systemon-chips, XNGP includes Highway NGP, City NGP, and Parking NGP functions, enabling advanced driver assistance from motorway cruising to complex urban navigation and automated parking.

The vehicle is equipped with radar sensors, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and 12 cameras with built-in recording devices throughout. Additionally,
the rearview mirror becomes a digital display when the rear entertainment screen is activated, giving drivers a clear view behind the vehicle.

A new 2025 feature is the AI ADAS “Little Blue Light,” improving visual communication between autonomous systems and occupants, offering clear feedback on operational status and intentions.

Compelling Value Proposition

In Singapore, the Xpeng X9 Premium Seat starts at S$359,999, with the Grand Seat at S$374,999, offering compelling value compared to similarly equipped European or Japanese MPVs. The blend of advanced technology, impressive range, ultra-fast charging, and sophisticated design creates a package that is hard to match at any price point.

The 2025 Xpeng X9 successfully redefines expectations for electric MPVs. By emphasising aerodynamic efficiency, advanced technology, and premium comfort over traditional utilitarian design, Xpeng has created a vehicle that appeals to tech-savvy families seeking both practicality and innovation.

However, questions persist about the long-term reliability and after-sales support of Chinese-made vehicles, including those manufactured by Xpeng. Will these new EVs endure over time, or will they prove to be less durable and desirable? Only time will tell.
