A Lighter Touch With Preservé

A first for Asia, Preservé introduces a minimally invasive approach to breast augmentation that preserves natural tissue and reduces downtime. Dr Martin Huang of MH Plastic Surgery explains what this means for women seeking subtle, harmonious enhancement.

Breast augmentation has long relied on the same core surgical principles, but a new technique is shifting the conversation in Singapore and across Asia. Called Preservé, the method focuses on safeguarding natural breast ligaments while introducing Motiva implants through a small, precisely created space. The result is an approach that aims to minimise disruption to the body, shorten recovery, and deliver a naturally integrated look.

For many patients, the promise of faster recovery and enhanced comfort may be the deciding factor in finally pursuing breast enhancement. Preservé is designed for women who want subtle results that align with their lifestyle, body proportions, and personal expectations. To understand how this technique works and what it means for women considering the procedure, we speak with Dr Martin Huang of MH Plastic Surgery, one of the first surgeons in the region trained and certified in the Preservé method.

Preservé marks a major step forward in breast augmentation. From a surgeon’s POV, how does this technique significantly differ from traditional breast augmentation methods used in the past?
Preservé is a breast augmentation procedure which involves the preservation of the connective tissue of the breast while enhancing it with a breast implant. The emphasis on breast tissue preservation is what makes it different from conventional approaches to breast augmentation, where there is usually some degree of disruption of the breast connective tissue. The connective tissue that is preserved consists of ligaments that surround the breast. These preserved ligaments will then also surround the breast implant after it has been inserted, resulting in the implant being cocooned within a cradle of breast ligaments. This helps to support the implant and stabilise its position, while making the edges of the implant less visible.

The procedure is described as minimally invasive and even possible without general anaesthesia. Can you explain what this means for patient safety, comfort, and recovery?
Because the implant is placed under the breast and on top of the chest muscle, the procedure can be performed under intravenous sedation supplemented with local anesthesia. Patient safety is similar to that of conventional breast augmentation, i.e. both are safe, but recovery from intravenous sedation is usually faster than general anesthesia. Postoperative comfort may be greater than conventional breast augmentation because there is relatively little disruption of breast tissue and no surgical dissection involving the chest muscle. As a result, recovery in terms of return to normal daily activities, e.g. work, childcare, and exercise is also faster.

You mentioned in a quote that Preservé is suited for a specific group who might not otherwise consider breast augmentation. Who are these patients and what makes this technique a better fit for them?
Some women would not normally consider breast augmentation for themselves because of their perception that the procedure would require more downtime than they can afford. These are usually busy individuals who have relatively little capacity for surgical recovery time. Since the recovery from the Preservé breast augmentation procedure is faster, such women may be more willing to consider it for themselves. These are therefore the patients who are seeking a less invasive option with shorter downtime and quicker recovery.

A number of Asian women prefer subtle and natural enhancements. How does Preservé cater to this aesthetic preference compared to conventional methods?
Both Preservé and conventional breast augmentation can produce natural looking enhancements, as long as the implants are not too big for the patient’s body dimensions and the right type of procedure is selected and performed correctly for the right patient. However, breast tissue preservation can result in more camouflage of the implant margins, as well as a more stable implant position due to preserving the supporting breast ligaments, compared to placing implants on top of the chest muscle in a conventional breast augmentation. This can produce a more subtle enhancement, especially when smaller implants are used.

As one of the first clinics in Asia to offer Preservé, how do you see this shaping the future of aesthetic surgery in Singapore and the region?
For many decades, an ongoing trend in all surgical specialties has been making procedures less invasive while producing effective outcomes. The field of aesthetic plastic surgery is no exception. In line with a greater emphasis on health and fitness among the general population, breast augmentation with an emphasis on breast tissue preservation may allow more women who desire a less invasive breast augmentation with minimal downtime and an earlier return to daily activities to consider the procedure to be a viable option for themselves. In this sense, surgical breast enhancement may become more accessible to women as a whole in the future.
