Bring Your A-Game: Brandon Chia

Brandon Chia is the Chairman and CEO of High-Desert International Group

Brandon Chia, who heads a social network marketing company, is on a mission to make the lives of his business partners and staff meaningful by helping them understand their core drivers in the context of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and the Buddhist Eight Levels of Consciousness, and seeing how they can address those needs within the company’s business model. Meaning and purpose, he reasons, is the next level of motivation, after the fulfilment of basic and material needs.

“I focus on mid- and long-term strategies by constantly challenging how we support our enterprisers in achieving their goals, and if there are ways to simplify the business. It is much better to think of how we will be disrupted, and then disrupt the disruptor. I look for ideas in adjacent industries and experiment with them in our business.”

Chia occupies himself with family, self-enrichment, and Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) activities. Keen on “reframing the concept of grinding as an opportunity to improve constantly”, he reviews his activities at the end of each day, reflects on how he spent his time, highlights areas he needs to work on, and sets his priorities for the following day. “I start off each day with exercise at the gym with my father or walking and cycling with my wife, after which we sit together for a family breakfast.”

Having a fixed daily schedule with his teams in various countries takes the guesswork out of what is happening, he says. He also sets micro-goals/objectives for himself to “gamify (his) own experience”.

Chia knows he is performing well when he still feels energized at the end of each week. “It’s counterintuitive, but the more time you spend on things that matter, the more energy you gain.”
