As Singapore celebrates 60 years of independence, we spotlight a new wave of changemakers across business, culture, and civic leadership. Armed with bold ideas, lived experiences, and an unwavering sense of purpose, these are the individuals shaping a more inclusive, innovative, and resilient nation.

What does it mean to build a nation today? In the Singapore of 2025, which is wealthier, more connected, yet grappling with deeper questions of equity, identity, and sustainability, it no longer rests solely in institutions or infrastructure. Increasingly, it’s in the hands of individuals: Founders, reformers, creators, and quiet disruptors who are laying the groundwork for a future shaped by progress and purpose. In this month's special, we spotlight a new generation of leaders reimagining what success looks like – from the boardroom to the art world, from hospitality to home services. Some are preserving legacy through reinvention; others are rewriting rules with fresh conviction. But all share a deep belief in Singapore’s promise and a determination to make their mark not just for today, but for generations to come.

ELAINE LEK
CEO, Luzerne Brands & Corporate Group

When Elaine Lek returned to Singapore to take the reins at Luzerne, the homegrown porcelain maker founded by her late grandfather, she brought with her decades of global branding experience and something more personal: A renewed sense of purpose.

“My decision to return was deeply intentional,” says Lek, who previously held leadership roles at fashion and beauty powerhouses like Versace, Lord & Taylor, and Dermalogica. “I wanted to transform Luzerne from a manufacturer into a storytelling brand rooted in craftsmanship, design, and meaning.”

As CEO since 2023, Lek has led Luzerne’s evolution into a company that proudly flies the Singapore flag in over 60 countries, all while staying deeply rooted in local heritage. “We’re a Made-in-Singapore, Made with Passion brand, but more than that, we’re building something that uplifts communities and reflects our values,” she says.

Those values are personal. After the loss of her son Zen to suicide, Lek co-founded the PleaseStay. Movement and established The Zen Dylan Koh Fund to provide free therapy for disadvantaged youth. This year, Luzerne launched the SG60 Diamond Collection not only to mark the nation’s milestone birthday, but also to spotlight youth mental health, which is a cause she now champions tirelessly.

“Singapore’s journey is about resilience and unity. I want the country’s next chapter to include compassion and connection,” she says. “Our youth are the heartbeat of that future. They need to be seen, heard, and supported.”

“Purpose drives everything I do. If my work helps even one person feel seen or supported, that’s enough.”

Lek’s definition of success has shifted. While she continues to shape Luzerne’s global presence, her true focus is on building a legacy that extends far beyond products. “Purpose drives everything I do,” she reveals. “If my work helps even one person feel seen or supported, that’s enough.”

Her boldest move wasn’t just reshaping a business, but turning grief into action – challenging stigma, starting difficult conversations, and using design as a platform for advocacy. “Boldness isn’t about being fearless,” she reflects. “It’s about choosing what matters most, even when it hurts.”

In doing so, Lek has become more than a brand leader. She’s a nation builder, shaping a future where beauty, business, and humanity can coexist.
