Singapore Dance Theatre presents Swan Lake with live orchestral accompaniment for the first time.

Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT) will end its 2019 season with Swan Lake from 5 to 8 December at the Esplanade Theatre. The Metropolitan Festival Orchestra will play Tchaikovsky’s score in the said production. The masterpiece, with choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov has been a part of the company’s classical repertoire since 2007.

“Having live orchestra music is the standard for ballets performances. It is definitely an important element that enhances the performance and brings new meaning for our audiences,” says Mr. Janek Schergen, artistic director.

“We must constantly endeavor to add artistic depth and quality in every area of our performances, thus we keep setting the goals higher and bringing the best production we can offer.”

Ms. Kwok Min Yi, who will dance the role of Odette/Odile, says, “Dancing to a live orchestra is very different from dancing to recorded music. Every performance will be different as the musicians play differently every time. Having a live orchestral accompaniment always excites me; we have been (dancing) to recorded music but now every performance has surprises.”
