Indulge in an unforgettable stay at FORESTIS, a luxurious hidden sanctuary in the Dolomite Mountains.

It was a constant “pinch me, I’m dreaming” moment for me. Waking up at 1,800 meters above sea level – surrounded by dense alpine forests and with the jagged peaks of the Dolomites unfolding before me through the clouds – was an experience unlike any other. As the golden morning light filtered through floor-to-ceiling windows, the crisp mountain air gently filled the room as I opened the sliding doors. This set the tone for deep relaxation, rejuvenation, and pure indulgence during my stay at FORESTIS.

Arrival Above the Clouds

As I arrived at FORESTIS, nestled on the Ploseberg above Brixen, a historical town in South Tyrol in Italy, I was captivated by the serene remoteness of the retreat. And almost immediately, the discomfort of motion sickness I felt due to the zigzagging road up to the property disappeared after a few deep, restorative breaths.

Unlike the bustling ski resorts surrounding the Italian Alps, FORESTIS is a world unto itself – a private escape where time slows down and the grandness of nature commands your attention. A long-forgotten vision of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, this secluded haven was originally intended as a health retreat for tuberculosis patients, chosen for its pristine spring water, pure air, and pleasant sun-drenched climate. Today, it has been reimagined as a five-star sanctuary where the grandeur of nature meets the FORESTIS brand of understated luxury.

The grandeur of the Dolomite Mountains on full display from the Tower Suites

Much has been done for the property to seamlessly blend with its surroundings. Most obvious would be the three sculptural wooden towers, inspired by the form of tree trunks, that rise discreetly above the landscape, complementing the original century-old manor house. Inside, the materials speak for themselves – fragrant spruce, Dolomite stone, and handwoven textiles create a setting that is warm, organic, and calming. Every space is designed to bring the outside in, from the vast windows framing the mountains to the subtle scent of alpine wood lingering in the air.

Here, each of the 62 suites is a tribute to nature. In the Tower Suites, the panoramic views are nothing short of mesmerizing, with the ever-changing sky reflecting in the glassy surfaces of the Dolomites. For an even more immersive experience, the Penthouse Suites offer private rooftop pools and saunas, where you can soak in complete solitude.

In the historic building, suites are slightly smaller, but retain an old-world charm, with elegant wooden paneling and cosy corners designed for quiet reflection. Wherever you choose to stay, expect plush furnishings, a minibar stocked with regional delicacies like apple juice and apple chips, and the luxury of pure spring water running through every tap and shower.

A Wellness Philosophy Rooted in the Forest

After a restoriative spa treatment, a dip in FORESTIS’ indoor pool is a must

At the heart of FORESTIS is its spa: A 2,000-square-meter sanctuary that draws on the ancient wisdom of the Celts. Inspired by the region’s four essential elements – pure water, mountain air, abundant sunshine, and mild alpine climate – the treatments here are deeply relaxing and restorative.

Guests can choose therapies centred around four native trees: Mountain pine, spruce, larch, and Swiss stone pine, each carrying unique healing properties. The forest rituals, infused with essential oils and grounding stones, work in harmony with the body’s natural rhythms, offering a profound sense of balance.

For those seeking a more meditative experience, try Wyda – the European counterpart to yoga – practiced outdoors with nothing but the murmuring of the forest as your soundtrack. And when it's time to unwind completely, the Finnish sauna, brine steam bath, and indoor and outdoor pools provide the perfect setting to embrace tranquillity.

Culinary Excellence with a Twist

Tiered seating at FORESTIS' main restaurant means everyone has unobstructed mountain views
Sample wines or arrange a candle-lit dinner in the refurbished wine cellar

Dining at FORESTIS is a celebration of the land. Under the guidance of Chef Roland Lamprecht and team, the cuisine follows the philosophy of ‘forest cooking,’ where local ingredients, foraged herbs, and mountain flavours take centre stage.

At the main restaurant, which has caused a bit of a stir on social media with its tiered seating design that looks out to the mountains, each dish tells a story – perhaps a plate of delicate pasta infused with spruce tips or a wild game dish enhanced with forest berries. Guests can also take part in intimate wine tastings in the atmospheric cellar or join a hands-on cooking class to discover the secrets of making handmade pasta in a private kitchen that looks out to the mountains.
