The new generation Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 looks set to retain its unofficial distinction as ‘the presidents’ watch’

First launched in 1956, the Day-Date was the rst calendar wristwatch to tell the day of the week, alongside the date, spelled out in full in an arc-shaped aperture at 12 o’clock. This indicator comes in a choice of 26 languages, and was once hailed as a technical achievement. Then as now, the Day-Date range comes only in precious metals — 18 ct yellow, white or Everose gold or 950 platinum.

The new generation of Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 retains some of these hallmarks. This time, however, new dials and gem-set bezels have been added to the range.

Two new models feature a novel dial design with a concentric gradient; the one in 18 ct yellow gold is paired with a green ombré dial, while the other in 18 ct Everose gold, with brown ombré dial. Diamond hour indicators, including two baguette-cut diamonds at 6 and 9 o’clock, decorate the dial, a signature of the Day-Date range.

Two other versions, in 18 ct yellow gold and 18 ct white gold, are fitted with a dial in decorative stone — in slightly veined turquoise and pink opal, respectively. The markers for 6 and 9 o’clock are rendered in 18 ct gold Roman numerals set with diamonds. Its bezel is further adorned with 52 brilliant-cut diamonds.

A last version comes in 18 ct white gold with a dial fully paved with diamonds and marked with ten hour indicators in rainbow-colored baguette-cut sapphires. There are 52 brilliant-cut diamonds that trace its bezel; another 412 brilliant-cut diamonds are set on the center links of its bracelet.

All models have the distinct Oyster Perpetual case, measuring 36 mm. The middle case is crafted in a monobloc, with a screw- down case back and a winding crown secured with a Twinlock double waterproofness system. Each timepiece in the range is waterproof to 100 meters (330 feet). A fluted bezel holds down a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with cyclops lens over the date.

The watches are all fitted with a self-winding perpetual mechanical movement – caliber 3255. It features a center hour, minute and seconds hands, and instantaneous day and date glimpsed through apertures. Day-Date has unrestricted rapid-setting, and a stop-seconds for precise time setting.

A President bracelet – distinguished by three-piece solid links – completes the piece; it is secured by a concealed folding Crownclasp.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 is certified both by COSC and Rolex, after casing, as Superlative Chronometer, symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.
